Today I was flying home to Costa Rica and had the pleasure of sitting behind a very chatty [white] man. As I was sitting so close to him, I could hear everything he was saying. At first, I could hear him talk about how he started college as an English major but then just wanted to have “fun” so he only took film and photo classes. Next, he moved on to talk about his time spent on organic farms and how amazing the experience is. I was already getting annoyed by the way he was talking about the arts as if they were unimportant and frivolous, and the classism in his discussion of farming… and then he started talking about his kombucha detox and how it relates to his vegan lifestyle. When I thought it was finally over, he started talking about how he cries for animals who “give up their lives for our sustenance.” Meanwhile, he was sitting on an airplane owned by a multinational corporation and not shedding any tears.
I wanted to get out of my chair and scream, then ask him: do you cry like that for LGBTQ people? women? people of color? what about workers being exploited? people in prisons?
Needless to say, I know the answer.
